Chapter Seven

PRES watched as Ben’s chest rose and fel rhythmicaly,

his features lax, his body truly at rest. He’d given Ben a

rigorous paddling before they’d fucked until they were

boneless and quite sated. Once in the throes of passion,

Ben’s sadness slipped away. He’d held Pres in thral,

his every touch wel placed, wel intentioned.

Ben had demanded more of Pres’s body than ever

before, and had given al that Pres demanded of his.

As Ben slept, Pres lay beside him, assessing the

life, dare he think it, they were building together.

Ben had given him a true sense of belonging since

their arrival at the Downs. They’d grown emotionaly

closer, though their interests were vastly different. While

Ben preferred to read and tend to business, Pres took

daily rides on Maggie and spent time in the garden. At

dinner, they conversed about a wide variety of topics,

played chess over their port, and then, up until recent

weeks, they made love every night, cementing their

relationship and ever-growing affection for each other.

Pres hadn’t performed his duties as Ben’s

secretary of sorts since they’d taken up residence in

Cambridge. Ben insisted there was no need. Even while

Ben had had calers and spent hours behind closed

doors with one in particular, he’d assured Pres that al

was wel and he needn’t involve himself.

Ben had, over the course of several weeks,

become more introspective and at times, quite distant.

There were days when he pursued Pres with a

vehemence that bordered on obsession, and then others

when he’d stare into the abyss, making him difficult to

reach. Something plagued his mind, and his

preoccupation had become chronic.

Sleep hadn’t come any easier, restive at best. The

nightmares had increased, and with them, Ben’s once

pleasant disposition had given way to shortness of

temper and more hours spent alone.

Pres took comfort in Ben’s peaceful slumber, for

only in repose did he feel Ben was completely his, with

no outside distraction. He leaned down, kissed Ben’s

slightly open mouth, and received a lazy peck in reply

before Ben roled to his side, his back to Pres.

Pres waited a few minutes until he was sure Ben

was solidly asleep, then went to the library to read.

He’d had a passing interest in horse breeding since

before he’d left the farm, and Ben had recommended a

book on the subject. In retrospect, Pres realized that

being the antithesis of the country gentleman, Ben

hadn’t explained why he would have such a volume.

The man was an enigma.

Though Ben’s library wasn’t as vast as many, it

took Pres considerable time to locate the book, as the

colection wasn’t arranged any discernible order. Ben

hadn’t been sure where it was, but assumed it was

somewhere between books on ancient Rome and those

on tobacco farming in the Americas.

After finding it in the two-book section devoted to

poetry, Pres sat at the desk, the late afternoon light

from the large bay window pouring over the wooden

surface.

He moved Ben’s papers out of the way, but

stopped when he saw his name printed in a neat hand.

Curiosity got the better of him. He took up the

paper and read it, then read al the rest, those scattered

loosely on top of the desk, as wel as inside a leather

portfolio. Everything concerned him—where he
